Do you ever wonder if you should take that trip or put the money towards your debt. I really think people should decide what’s best for them. Different people have different priorities based on their circumstances. For example, there could be a couple that is trying to get out of debt, but one spouse has cancer. Although getting out of debt is important it may not be as important as taking a vacation which could be their last together.
For people who aren’t going through any health issues with their family they may consider taking that vacation and taking a longer time to pay off their debt. The decision is completely up to them. The important thing is to priortize what’s most important to you and make a decision and don’t let anyone make you feel guilty for making the decision that you made.
There are also many alternatives if you are looking for ways to have fun while getting out of debt that won’t break the bank.
- Instead of going to that all inclusive one week vacation, you could consider going away for the weekend instead or for three days during the week instead of seven. Living Social usually has great weekend getaways.
- Go camping for a week or weekend with the family
- Drive to your getaway instead of taking the plane
- Look for free events such as festivals
- Check out your local museum, sometimes the rates are cheaper on certain days and times
- Go to your local beach for the day
- Have a movie day and watch movies on Netflix
- Have a sleepover with some friends like when you were a kid
- If you don’t want to give up going to restaurants completely, checkout Groupon. They always have restaurant deals
- Go for a long drive and check out a city in your state or province that you’ve never been to before
- Be a tourist in your own city for the weekend by doing things that tourist would do. You may discover things about your city that you didn’t even know
- Go to a local lounge and listen to live music
- Volunteer your time at a charity that means a lot to you
What are some things that you do or did while you were getting out of debt.

We are really trying to buckle down so that we can pay off my student loans super fast. This includes using coupons when we want to eat out.
Coupons are a great idea when eating out. Groupon always has deals.
Mhm I think those are some great ideas. Living with debt doesn't mean you have to be miserable and have no fun until it's all gone. But maybe don't go on some expensive all inclusive trip but think up some cheaper and still fun travel alternatives.
I agree!
Those are great idea! I think you can make small sacrifices while you are getting out of debt and not notice it too much. It's important not to live too cheaply or it will get old quick and you will get burnt out!
Plus, once you get out of debt you can always add the fun stuff back in!!!
That's true! Happiness in small doses is not bad until you're out of debt.
We go camping every year, though we still have student loans left. We do it VERY cheaply, and it's really one of the highlights of the year.
I agree, getting out of debt doesn't = no fun. Heck, at one point we made a game out of paying off our loan, with a debt thermometer and everything. We're now almost halfway done with the loan. :)
I love that idea of making a game out of getting out of debt. Especially if you have kids. You can get them involved.
You make great points here. It doesnt have to be all or nothing propositions. Otherwise your plan will more than likely fail because you will constantly feel deprived.
Exactly!
If you happen to become partnering a bad company, you will likely be wasting your cash, serious amounts
of efforts. A payday advance is really a small online loan that it is possible to get if you’ll need cash rapidly.
