7 Rainy Day Activities Your Kids will Love

Once those rainy days roll around and the kids are off from school, parents have two things on their mind: how to keep their kids out of the rain and how to keep them occupied without having to spend much money. It is always handy to have a few options up your sleeves to make a rainy day a memorable one for your kids as well as for yourself.

Here are 10 rainy day activities that your kids are sure to love and will cost you very little:

1. Play board games the old way

Although kids these days have access to hundreds of online board games, they’ll appreciate the old fashion way of playing if you play with them. The all time favorite classic board games for kids include Monopoly, Snake and Ladders and Candy Land.

2. Take the kids swimming

Children love swimming and seem to be able to swim all day. Besides being a great way to exercise, swimming is cheap. Take your kids to an indoor pool to avoid the rain.

3. Take the kids to a movie

These days, children spend a great deal of time watching TV online. However, they still love going to the movie with their parents. There are always great movies playing at the theatres, so choose one that is making waves and take your kids to see it. To cut the cost, choose a day when there is a discount.

4. Read stories

Good stories never go out of fashion and children of every generation love them. Choose a good book and read it to yourself first. Then plan how you are going to read it to your kids, improvising the voice and mannerism of each character.

5. Give the kids a cooking lesson

Kids do not generally like cooking because they think of it as a chore. However, they will love it if you make it fun. Choose some simple dishes that your kids love and show them how to prepare the recipe and cook them. Do it over several days – one dish per day. Besides being fun, it will be a lesson they will greatly value when they become adults themselves.

6. Paint the walls

If your rooms need repainting, then involve your kids in DIY painting. Show them how to use the brush and how to apply the paint without creating a mess. When they have learned enough, give each of them an area that they can call their own. It may not be a good idea to paint the exterior of your house, but you can always paint the interior walls and ceilings. And your children will simply love it.

7. Have a party

Most children love to dance and eat. Besides being fun, dancing is a great way to reenergize the body and mind. You can get a karaoke machine and sing your favorite songs.

Use your imagination, be creative and think out of the box when searching for things to do with your kids on a rainy day. To keep the costs down, concentrate on the resources available at home. You may not know it yet, but if you look carefully you will find that your home is a treasure-trove of things that help you save money on children’s activities at any time of the year.

What do you do on a rainy day to keep your kids occupied?

Texas Was Awesome!

I just got back from one of the best road trips ever! A long time friend of mine moved to Texas in 2010, and I went to go visit her in Houston last Saturday. She had the whole entire week planned out. Let’s just say I need another vacation.

Once I arrived we went to Pappadeaux’s for dinner which was absolutely delicious. We then went to Joel Osteen’s church. Here’s a picture of the lobby of Lakewood. This is one of my favorite scriptures, so I had to take a picture. We actually got a chance to meet Joel after service. It was so nice. I am not sure if I can post a picture of him without getting his permission, so I’ll just stick with the one of his lobby.

After church we left Houston and headed for a 4 hour drive to Dallas. I wanted to visit TD Jakes church on Sunday morning, and since his church startes at 9:00am, we thought it was best to drive there that night. We arrived in Dallas at 2:00am Sunday morning, slept for a few hours and arrived at church before 9:00am.

I was so happy that he was actually there. Maybe because it was Mother’s Day. Since his church is a mega church and he is extremely popular, I wasn’t sure if he was actually going to be there or not.

After church we explored Dallas and headed to San Antonio the next day to visit the famous Riverwalk. Check out some pics.

We stayed at the Riverwalk Plaza hotel, which was pretty nice. Breakfast was also included in the hotel stay which was a huge bonus, since we had to pay for all of our meals.

On Tuesday we headed to Austin to see what all of the talk about these food trucks were all about. Austin was quite nice. We met a lot of great people. My friend is a chef and couldn’t wait to try some of the food on the trucks. We ate from several trucks and I must say Taco’s in Texas are fabulous! I haven’t had a taco since high school, so when my friend suggested that I try one, I wasn’t too optimistic. I wanted another one after the first one. Check out some pics of some of the food trucks in Austin.

This is the back of a school bus food truck. The guy sitting in front of it, wouldn’t move so I could get a good pic.

After Austin we headed back to Houston, but not before doing some shopping at San Marcos Premium Outlets. I bought a total of 11 dresses at the outlet. I couldn’t believe the dresses were all under $22. San Marcos is a city between Austin and Houston. After my shopping spree we finally headed back to Houston.

I got a chance to meet up with Crystal from Budgeting in the Fun Stuff which was awesome! She had a get together last Friday, so my friend and I stopped by. Crystal is so funny, she had us rolling the whole time we were there. It was definitely a great way to end my awesome time in Texas.

Have you ever been to Texas? If so, what did you enjoy the most?

How To Make Your Own Car Air Freshener

Today’s guest post is from Isabelle who blogs overs at She has perfected the art of making her own air freshners, and wants to share her tips. She says it’s cheap and they make great gifts. Check out her post.

Many of us treat our cars like our second homes. We eat in them, leave garbage in them and throw stuff in the trunk when we’re not sure what else to do with it. If this sounds like you, why not treat your car to a bit of TLC? With this quick, simple guide you can make your car smell less like a takeaway joint and more like a bunch of roses. (or anything else you want it to smell like)

Choose your shape

Firstly, you’ll need to choose what shape, image or word you want your air freshener to be. Although the classic shape is a tree, you can have anything you want. Even your name or a friend’s name would work, as long as it’s not too long!

Cutting & sticking

Draw a template of your design, and cut it out on a piece of cardboard before doing the same with a piece of fabric of your choice. To save on buying fabric, you could use an old tablecloth, item of clothing or even curtains. You’ll need to cut out two pieces of fabric, to stick with superglue on both sides of the cardboard.

Make sure you create a little rectangle at the top, in the middle of your word or image because you’ll need to be able to punch a hole in this part.

Pick your scent

Once you’ve stuck the fabric down, take some of your favorite oil and carefully drip about 10 drops over each side of the air freshener. Don’t go too crazy with the essential oil  though, as it’s usually pretty strong stuff! The best part about this bit is that you get to choose any oil you like. If you’re making a gift for a friend you can use a scent which you know they’ll love to add a personal touch.

Now wait for the air freshener to dry.

Nearly ready…

Use a hole punch to create a hole in the top of your air freshener. Make sure you do this bit carefully, as you don’t want to punch the hole in the wrong place as it won’t hang right.

Take a piece of ribbon, string or twine and thread it through the hole before attaching it to your wing mirror – making sure it’s not obscuring your view – and you’re done!

Top up you scent

You don’t have to make a new one when the scent starts to wear off. Simply detach the air freshener and top it up with more oil.

If you’re feeling extra creative, you could make a few in different shapes and scents to mix and match depending on your mood.

Get festive

It’s that time of year when we’re all trying to find unique presents for our loved ones without having to spend a fortune. You can make your air freshener gifts extra festive by choosing some Christmassy scents. Try cinnamon, ginger or fir needle essential oils, or play with combinations of oil until you find one they’ll love.

Make them into festive shapes like Christmas trees, holly berries or even Santa Claus. They’re cheap to make and are really thoughtful stocking fillers.

You don’t need to have a car to make your own air freshener. Make them for the house, and hang them over the door handles!

My comment: I never thought of making my own air freshner. This sounds super easy to do and would probably be fun to do with kids. I also like the idea of topping up the scent yourself. Some air freshners don’t last long at all, so I am constantly buying new ones.

Have you ever tried to make your own air freshner?

I Almost Relapsed!

Today is day 14 of my McDonald’s fast and it has not been easy.  For those of you just tuning in, you could check out my post on my fast here. I knew it would be hard,  but dang it’s really hard. Last week I was hanging out with my girlfriend and I was so hungry, and of course there was a McDonald’s right around the corner from where we were. I wanted fries so badly, but my friend encouraged me to get something else and so I did. If she wasn’t with me I probably would have caved. Instead of those nice salty fries I opted for barbecue chicken and rice, which was so much more healthier.

I still think I kind of cheated because I ate two bags of chips. Maybe I should have made a goal of fasting from chips as well. I mean they’re both fried potatoes with salt. Since I didn’t say I am not going to eat chips, I think I am still in the game. I’ve got two in a half weeks  left and I can’t wait.

I really never thought I could become so addicted to junk like that. Growing up I was never that kid that loved candy or chips. I would occasionally eat fries, but it was never this bad. After my fast I am going to have to start keeping track of how often I eat at McDonald’s. Maybe I should have a little fun by putting $5 in a piggy bank every time I eat there. Or I can give $5 to hubby every time. The latter would make me stop eating at McDonald’s all together. I’ll have to think about that one.

What I don’t want to happen is I limit McDonald’s and start going to Wendy’s. I really like their fries as well, just not as much as Mickey Dees. There are also not as many Wendy’s as there are McDonald’s. They seem to be on every street corner here. I’ll just have to pay attention to all my fast food stops to it doesn’t get too out of hand.

Do you have any favorite foods that you catch yourself eating way too often?

Would You Pay To Meet Someone?

Online dating seems to be the way to meet people now a days, since a lot of people just don’t like clubbing anymore. I use to go clubbing when I was younger, but I was not looking for a husband there, nor was I ready for marriage in those days. I just wanted to figure out my likes and dislikes. When I got to my mid twenties after a bad break up I knew what I didn’t want, which only brought me closer to what I did want. While I was waiting for my King, I took some time to discover what I really wanted.

When I figured I was ready for marriage I started to look, but by then I was not into clubbing anymore and decided to take God more seriously. I started going back to church, but wasn’t really optimistic about meeting someone in church simply because there were about 12 women to 1 man and I knew my odds were slim. I remember thinking back then, how on earth am I going to meet someone. Then I thought maybe I’ll meet someone at work since I am on the road all the time.

Boy Was I wrong!

Well I didn’t meet anyone that I wanted to date at work or at church. In 2010 I went to Atlanta to visit some friends and one of my friends mentioned online dating. Now my mother has been telling me to try online dating for years, but I always thought online dating was for desperate people. Boy was I wrong! My girlfriend went on to tell me how many great guys she had met online. Then she startd showing me some of the guys. I thought, what do I have to loose. So when I got back home I tried a free website called Plentyoffish. Doesn’t the name just make you chuckle? This was the site my girlfriend had been meeting these great guys.

I was shocked at how much I liked online dating. It was great! You fill out a profile and the site matches you with guys with similar interests. What I really liked is that I didn’t have to go out and meet guys that I didn’t like. You know what I am talking about ladies. When you go to the grocery store or the mall and a guy comes up to you and gives you a compliment, which is always nice by the way, but then you realize the compliment was only because he wanted your number. You know you’re not interested, but because you don’t want to be rude you stay and talk to him for 5 minutes.

No more of that online, if you don’t like what you see you just keep it moving. Now I am not talking abut being shallow or anything like that. I know it’s what’s on the inside that counts, but there are a few things that are deal breakers for me such as smoking, a guy with kids, and a non christian. Online you can filter those guys out immediately.

Meeting Hubby!

I actually met some great guys on PoF including hubby. Hubby was actually the fourth guy that I dated on PoF. It was just my luck I guess. It was my first time ever trying online dating and I ended up meeting my husband within two months of signing up. Who would have thought! I guess it was just my time. Since I met hubby I have told everyone I know that is single and looking for a long term relationship about PoF. Unfortunately my friends haven’t been having the same kind of luck that I had,  but I keep telling them not to give up and just keep on looking. Their King is out there too!

Some of my friends have gone on some of the paid sites, which I don’t know if I would have done, simply because I am just cheap. It’s really for no other reason than that. Besides there are free sites out there, so I would have probably tried all of the free ones first.

How about you, would you or have you tried online dating? Also would you pay?
